Synthetic Turf Care Instructions

One of the many questions we get from prospective clients is what type of maintenance artificial grass entails. While synthetic turf is not maintenance FREE, it is most definitely LOW maintenance compared to alternatives like natural grass and other ground covers.

On top of the maintenance benefits, artificial grass does not need watering or fertilization. Pests rarely have any interest in synthetic grass. And as you know, NE Florida grasses like St. Augustine and Zoysia require constant maintenance to stay looking green and lush. What a hassle.

That said, we do not over-promise that synthetic grass is 100% maintenance free. On rare occasions, our customers may see anthills, a few stray weeds here and there, and in even rarer occasions—mildew growth. Again, all of these are quite uncommon.

Here is the good news: All of our turf is made of polyethylene and polypropylene fibers, and because of this, it stands up extremely well to most maintenance products.

Our customers stay ahead of maintenance issues by periodically blowing off leaves and debris. By doing this, they disallow leaves and acorns and so forth to decompose into organic matter, thus preventing weed growth. Still, weeds may pop up from time to time. If they do, simply spray them with weed killer or pull them by hand.

If you experience ant hills (again, a highly remote possibility), simply sprinkle ant killer granules on the mound and they will be gone faster than it takes a Jaguar fan to start talking about next years draft picks.

If you need to clean an adjacent hardscape with outdoor bleach or algae cleaner, it will not harm or discolor your artificial grass. At the end of the day, the only thing that can really harm your turf is UV rays. Our turf has a life cycle of about 15 years, with most of our turf carrying a 10-year UV warranty.

If you have read any of our other blog posts, you may be aware of the need for infill sand, which gives artificial grass ballast (weight), protects the tuft binds, and ensures the individual grass fibers stay vertical. One of the most popular questions we receive is: “Does the infill ever have to be replaced?” In the vast majority of cases the answer is a resounding ‘no.’ In fact, with time, the infill actually becomes more stable within the artificial grass.
